Herold to Kammanassie Dam eBiking and mountain biking Route

If you follow the old, historical Montagu Pass that winds its tortured way up and over the Outeniqua Mountains just outside George in the Western Cape, you'll eventually get to Herold, a tiny hamlet that is the home of Over the Mountain Tea Garden and Guest Farm. It is a wonderful base for making excursions into the Karoo area, which surrounds the Kammanassie Nature Reserve to the east of Oudtshoorn and the north of Herold.

The first ride we did from there was a few weeks ago and it it took us out the northern side of the village, crossing over the N9 onto a gravel farm road that meanders through the Paardepoort Pass and onwards towards Dysselsdorp. About 11km from Herold a cross road appears. Left takes you to the N9 between George and Oudtshoorn and while the N9 is best avoided (it's narrow and very busy) the trip there and then back to Over the Mountain makes for a very pleasant 38km out and back ride.

If you keep going straight (as we did in the video below) it takes you to Kammanassie Dam (and onwards to Oudtshoorn and Dysselsdorp if you would want to) passing though some very beautiful scenery - the dusty blue peaks of the Kammanassie Mountains to the East and the Doring River valley to the west.

We arrived at the dam but there were "prohibited entry" signs all over the place, which took care of the coffee and rusks that were were intending to have there. Instead, after cranking up the climb out of the valley we chose to picnic on the side of the road amongst a particularly beautiful (what's the collective noun for a whole lot of aloes - clump, grove, copse?) of tall aloes.

We were able to build up quite a rate of knots on some of the downhills en route back to Herold which was most exhilarating.

A lovely Karoo ride in spite of the fact there we couldn't get right to the water's edge at the dam. C'est la vie. If you do park at Over the Mountain, please let them know how long you'll be and do try their fare - there are some pretty fine munchies to be had.

Route Distance: 58km total

Route conditions: A few kilometres of tar toads at the beginning and end, otherwise smooth gravel. It can get very hot out there in the warmer months so early is better. Take plenty of water and some snacks for sustenance along the way.
